Joe Anderson is the son of a merchant seaman and an office cleaner. He joined the Merchant Navy at 16 and became the youngest ever convener in the National Union of Seamen.
He took a degree in social work at Liverpool John Moores University, became a social worker went on to lead a social inclusion unit for young people with behavioural and emotional difficulties.
Joe was elected to Liverpool City Council in 1998, becoming Leader of the Council in 2010. Two years later he stood for Mayor of Liverpool and won on the first ballot with a majority of 50,000, and almost 60 per cent of the votes.
Developing the city’s economy and creating new jobs, new schools and new homes are Joe’s priorities for Liverpool. Liverpool’s best days lie ahead as a leading world-class city, he says.
